Re-Engagement Email Structure

Subject line options:
  • "Still interested in [topic]?"
  • "We miss you, [First Name] — still want updates?"
  • "Quick question before we stop emailing you"
  • "Are these emails still useful to you?"

Body content: Keep short (under 150 words). Remind them of the value they signed up for. Give them a clear YES choice (click button = stay subscribed) and make it easy to unsubscribe. Do NOT send a promotional campaign as your re-engagement email — it will get more spam complaints.

Example re-engagement email body:

Hi [First Name],

We noticed you haven't opened our emails in a while, so we wanted to check in.

If you still want to receive [content type] from us, click the button below — and we'll keep sending.

If not, no worries — click unsubscribe and we'll stop.

Send Strategy

  • Send re-engagement from a SEPARATE IP than your main marketing pool
  • Start with 91–120 day inactives; don't send to 180+ day inactives in the same batch
  • Send on a weekday (Tuesday–Thursday) during business hours for your recipient's timezone
  • Do NOT send more than one re-engagement email per subscriber per campaign sequence
  • Wait 7–14 days before suppressing non-responders

Post Re-Engagement Actions

ResponseAction
Clicked "Keep Me Subscribed"Reset engagement date; return to active segment; send normal campaigns
Opened but didn't clickCount as mild re-engagement; keep for 30 more days; suppress if no further engagement
UnsubscribedAdd to suppression; remove from all lists
No response after 14 daysSuppress from all future campaigns
Marked as spamSuppress immediately; investigate if complaint rate spikes
Suppressing inactive subscribers before your next major campaign is the highest-ROI deliverability action available. It reduces complaint rates, improves open rates (denominator shrinks), and signals engagement to ISPs — all of which improve inbox placement for your engaged subscribers.
